Osteoporosis is widely underdiagnosed in Australia, with many people unaware of their condition until they suffer a fracture. A DEXA bone density scan is recommended for men over 70yrs and women over 65yrs, and anyone over 50yrs who is at increased risk of osteoporosis, including individuals with a history of fractures, certain medical conditions, or long-term steroid use. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, low body weight, and physical inactivity can also increase your risk.
Based on your risk factors, you may be eligible for a Medicare-rebatable DEXA bone density scan which is the most accurate way to measure bone health.
1. Complete the Online Assessment – start by completing this online assessment created by the Garvan Institute to help better understand your risk of osteoporosis.
2. Assessment Review – our GP will review your assessment and determine if you are eligible for a Medicare-rebatable DEXA bone density scan and bone health marker blood test.
3. We’ll Email you your Referral – even if you don’t meet Medicare criteria, we can still provide a private referral (if eligible) to proceed with the scan. Estimated out of pocket costs for private scans vary by state but are in the region of $300.
4. Schedule your DEXA Scan – schedule your DEXA bone density scan at your local I-MED Radiology clinic.
5. Book Your GP Consult (included in the cost) – our GP will walk you through your results and help you understand any health implications and next steps.
This health check includes a 10 minute GP consult to review your assessment and determine if you are eligible for a Medicare-rebatable DEXA bone density scan.
We’ll provide you with your online referral for your scan. Even if you don’t meet Medicare criteria, we will still provide a private referral (if appropriate) so you can proceed with the scan. Estimated out of pocket costs for private referrals vary by state but are in the region of $300.
